Rolando Peña, born on October 27, 1942, in Caracas, Venezuela, is a renowned Venezuelan-American conceptual artist and dancer. Known as “El Príncipe Negro” (The Black Prince), Peña emerged as a pivotal figure in the Latin American avant-garde scene during the 1960s. He collaborated with notable personalities such as Andy Warhol, participating in several of Warhol’s films, and was a key member of the Warhol Superstars. Peña’s work spans various media, including performance art, multimedia installations, and film, often exploring themes related to oil exploitation and its socio-economic impacts. His contributions to contemporary art have been recognized with numerous accolades, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009.
